WINDOWS TIPS ARCHIVES 3

October - 2008

If your school / college or office has blocked browser access so that you cannot surf internet, then let me mention here a nice trick to circumvent this problem / rule.

1. Open any windows default application like paint, calculator, notepad etc.
2. Choose Help ( F 1 ) from the menu bar.
3. From the Help menu choose help topics.
4. Right click the title bar of the help window.
5. Fro the context menu select jump to URL. Here input the website address and it will open in the right side window pane.

Let me add here that websites opened in windows explorer uses Internet Explorer, so this is not the right way to access restricted websites.

November - 2008

Windows XP allows you to change 3 properties of recycle bin. Simply right click on the recycle bin icon and the corresponding dialog box will allow you to modify the following settings.

1. Do not move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted.
2. Maximum size of recycle bin.
3. Display delete confirmation dialog.

I will warn all users here that the first and third properties are very important and have a purpose. If you tick the first option then the files deleted will be out of your computer and there will be no way to get them back if accidently deleted them.

The third option too is quite dangerous. The prompt which you normally get when deleting a file will not pop up. That means you can indiscriminately delete files.

The reason for mentioning the above tips is, if you are doing a system cleanup then the frequent delete confirmation pop up can be very frustrating, in which case you can by pass the default settings. But use it judiciously.

The third property which can be changed here is the size of the recycle bin, which by default is 10%.

Hope you found this tip useful.
